NYSTEC’s Kevin Owens on the Mindset He Tries to Bring to Consulting Clients

Says the leader of the Albany firm that’s grown to 400 employees: “I’m a living example of consultants came to my business and my job got better, and yours can too.”

Kevin Owens started his career as an accountant, but after working with an outside firm on a major technology upgrade in the late ‘90s, he was recruited to become a consultant himself.

“Every six months or so, it’s really like having a brand new job working with a brand new group of people, perhaps on a brand new topic. It really makes it kind of exciting,” Owens said.

Today, Owens is the president and CEO of NYSTEC, originally New York State Technology Enterprise Corp., which was founded in 1996.

Though it works with the state, and most of its clients are state agencies and other government authorities, it is an independent nonprofit firm.
