Bridging Education and Industry for a Stronger Workforce and Economy in New York State

New York State is home to a vibrant and unique workforce of innovators, entrepreneurs and students with ideas that have changed the world. Navigating the path from idea to impact requires more than just vision. It demands the right support system.

NYSTEC founded IgniteU to help small businesses learn, grow and create real-world applications of startup theories. Since 2015, the program has supported hundreds of local startups to reach their full potential and evolved to include partnerships with nonprofits, academia, industry and government to strengthen workforce and economic development statewide. IgniteU accelerates learning and connections that drive growth.

Building the Talent Pipeline: STEAM to Fellowship to Enterprise
Innovation starts early. IgniteU’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programming brings high school students, especially in communities historically underrepresented in STEAM careers, into hands-on arts-and-sciences learning that builds confidence, creative problem-solving skills and visibility into future industries they may not have considered. The goal is to expand the pool of future talent across New York state and prepare students with the foundation they need to succeed.

This foundation continues through the IgniteU Fellowship, where college students apply design thinking skills and build their professional experience through collaborative projects with businesses and organizations. Fellows gain career experience, mentorship and exposure to emerging industries, while companies benefit from fresh perspectives and new talent. Together, this bridges the gap between classroom learning and workforce readiness.
