Our Origins
NYSTEC has a long, proud history with New York State. Nearly 30 years ago, we were established after the closure of the Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY. The purpose? To benefit New York State businesses and government entities by leveraging advanced information technologies and expertise from the Air Force Research Laboratory.
In 1996, New York State created a centralized contract with NYSTEC to enable government entities to easily access expertise and services to speed up technology solution implementations, improve project success, and maximize value realized from investments.
Since then, NYSTEC has grown from a team of three to more than 400 employees. With our headquarters still in Rome, NY, we also have offices in Albany, Troy, and New York City.
Today, our consultants bring decades of experience to the table, working with state and local governments on a variety of technology modernization, service transformation, quality assurance, cybersecurity, and business intelligence projects. Our rich history with New York State positions our experts well to understand the unique challenges our clients face because we serve the same communities. NYSTEC: New York’s Partner in Transformation
1993
The federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure Commission called for the closure of the Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY. This was expected to affect 9,000 personnel, with an anticipated economic loss of $750 million. Although they determined that the base itself would close, several other entities co-located at the base would remain, including the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
1994
New York State decided to establish a company to leverage advanced information technologies, expertise, and methodologies from the AFRL to benefit government entities and businesses statewide. The idea was accompanied by a name: New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation (NYSTEC).
1995
The State issued an RFP for a company to operate NYSTEC. The winner was Syracuse Research Corporation: an independent, not-for-profit research and development company that creates solutions for customers in the defense, environment, and intelligence industries. The NYS Science and Technology Foundation pledged $10 million over five years to kickstart the company.
1996
NYSTEC was incorporated and granted an OGS central services contract (currently called a centralized contract), allowing New York State government entities and OGS authorized users to contract with NYSTEC easily and efficiently.
1999
NYSTEC opens its Albany office.
2005
NYSTEC opens its New York City office.
2015
IgniteU NY, founded and powered by NYSTEC, launches in Troy, NY.
2017
NYSTEC holds its first annual Population Health Innovation Summit (PHIS), which focuses each year on different factors affecting the health and well-being of New Yorkers.
2024
NYSTEC launches the IgniteU Fellowship Program, supporting STEM students in local colleges and universities.
2026
NYSTEC celebrates 30 years of being New York’s trusted partner in technology and transformation and remains dedicated to bettering communities across the state.
