About the Senior Consultant – Senior Automation Engineer

As a senior consultant – senior automation engineer in the Change Management and Learning Development Practice Area, you lead the development and implementation of accessibility testing solutions for New York State’s digital properties. This role focuses on ensuring state websites and applications comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1/2.2 Level AA standards, as required under federal ADA regulations and New York State law. The ideal candidate will also have strong skills in synthesizing and presenting findings in clear, actionable ways to diverse stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities: Senior Consultant – Senior Automation Engineer

Overall, in the role of senior consultant – senior automation engineer, you will:

  • Develop and deploy testing solutions: create and implement scripts and tools leveraging accessibility testing platforms (e.g., pa11y, Axe, Siteimprove) to audit NYS websites and applications.
  • Technical advisory: guide agencies and vendors on remediating accessibility issues, ensuring all solutions meet WCAG compliance standards.
  • Data collection and analysis: configure testing pipelines to collect comprehensive accessibility data and prioritize issues based on severity and compliance risk.
  • Present findings: communicate accessibility audit results and recommendations in a clear, understandable manner tailored to technical and non-technical audiences, including ITS leadership, agency stakeholders, and development teams.
  • Innovate testing approaches: research and introduce new tools, techniques, and methodologies to improve audit accuracy and efficiency.
  • Collaboration on test plans: partner with the accessibility QA lead and other accessibility analysts to define test plans and integrate testing protocols into continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines for continuous compliance.
  • Generate actionable reports: provide clear, data-driven insights from audits to support remediation efforts and policy decisions.
  • Maintain current knowledge: stay updated on legal and technical accessibility standards and ensure all tools and processes align with evolving requirements.
Required Qualifications: Senior Consultant – Senior Automation Engineer

Candidates applying for the role of senior consultant – senior automation engineer should have the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

  • Proven experience (three to five years) developing and maintaining automated accessibility testing tools.
  • Expertise in accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1/2.2, ADA Title II, Section 508, and related laws.
  • Proficiency in scripting and programming (e.g., JavaScript, Python) for automation tasks.
  • Familiarity with integrating accessibility testing tools into CI/CD workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as pa11y, Axe, or similar.
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting testing data and prioritizing issues.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including designers, developers, and QA teams.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications: Senior Consultant – Senior Automation Engineer

It would be helpful for candidates applying for the senior consultant – senior automation engineer role to have the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

  • Accessibility certifications (e.g., CPACC, WAS, Trusted Tester).
  • Experience building accessibility testing solutions within government or large organizations.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and team collaboration tools.
Education and Experience: Senior Consultant – Senior Automation Engineer

For the senior consultant – senior automation engineer, candidates should have the following education/experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree and three years of related experience. An equivalent combination of advanced education, training, and experience will be considered.
