About the Principal Azure Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

The NYSTEC principal azure cloud infrastructure engineer is responsible for the architecture design and planning, implementation, management, support, and oversight of the Azure environment. This role provides technical support and technical leadership across the organization and is responsible for establishing the direction for the architecture, standards, design, automation, and implementation in a distributed cloud and on-premises environment.

This position may be based out of NYSTEC’s Rome or Albany office.

Key Responsibilities: Principal Azure Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

Overall, in the role of principal azure cloud infrastructure engineer, you will:

  • Work closely with internal and external cloud infrastructure architects and engineers to design, implement, and manage secure, scalable, and reliable cloud infrastructure environments supporting NYSTEC business processes and strategies.
  • Propose and implement cloud infrastructure transformation and automation based on business requirements.
  • Validate existing infrastructure security, performance, and availability, and make recommendations for improvements and optimization.
  • Implement infrastructure best practices in areas such as cloud infrastructure (CI), change management, performance, scalability, security, and availability
  • Address security findings, risks, and vulnerabilities by developing, testing, and deploying configuration changes.
  • Perform activities for patch releases including configuration changes, required documentation, and approvals.
  • Develop and test configurations to address performance issues and reduce operational costs.
  • Perform routine operations including troubleshooting and resolving Tier 2 and 3 service desk tickets, and performance, server, and log monitoring.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and management using tools like ARM templates and Terraform.
  • Stay current with the latest Azure technologies and best practices.
  • Present recommendations to C-Suite executives and communicate project updates to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with and mentor IT teams and technicians to provide guidance in implementing Azure and configuration changes, as well as develop and maintain documentation for Azure infrastructure and processes.
  • Plan and introduce network standards and cloud engineering methods.
  • Work with corporate information security to perform security analyses and integrate cybersecurity measures to protect cloud networks.
  • Collaborate on data migration from external sources to internal Azure databases.
Required Qualifications: Principal Azure Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

Candidates applying for the role of principal azure cloud infrastructure engineer should have the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Azure services, including virtual machines, storage, networking, and databases.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code tools, such as Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates or Terraform.
  • Knowledge of Azure networking concepts, including virtual networks, subnets, and network security groups.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
  • Proficient in Azure Active Directory (AAD) for identity and access management and scripting languages such as PowerShell or Azure CLI for automation.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps for continuous integration and deployment.
  • Knowledge of Azure monitoring and management tools, such as Azure Monitor and Azure Log Analytics.
  • Understanding of Azure security features and best practices for securing cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with Azure Backup and Disaster Recovery solutions.
  • Skilled in managing IT projects and associated team members with a primary focus is on the implementation and delivery of technical initiatives.
  • Ability to analyze business requirements, assess technology options, and create high-level solutions that align with the division’s long-term goals and priorities.
  • Experience creating and maintaining infrastructure using public cloud services, specifically AWS or Azure.
Preferred Qualifications: Principal Azure Cloud Infrastructure Engineer
  • Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions.
Education and Experience: Principal Azure Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

For the principal azure cloud infrastructure engineer role, candidates should have the following education/experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or related field. A minimum of ten years of experience supporting operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a solution architect, principal/senior engineer, lead developer, or similar role with experience architecting cloud native solutions and an understanding of cloud security best practices and compliance standards.
