About the Role:

The NYSTEC strategic relationship manager contributes to the development and refinement of NYSTEC’s vision and strategy and is primarily responsible for fostering and transforming NYSTEC’s innovation programs and services. The aim is to leverage the technology base in New York State to define, develop, and enhance high-tech innovation, knowledge, and capabilities throughout government and industry. In addition to working in concert with our Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice and Business Development, this position will build and maintain successful relationships with potential partners/stakeholders, including federal, state, and local governments and academia, as well as the private sector as appropriate. This position provides oversight and development of long-range strategies for increasing NYSTEC’s presence and exposure to partners in the Mohawk Valley—as well as statewide and nationally—in support of NYSTEC’s mission. This is accomplished by providing leadership and accountability, by delivering the NYSTEC Experience to internal and external clients. The position develops short- and long-term strategic goals and objectives consistent with the business and operational goals of NYSTEC. The results of this work have a significant impact on the achievement of organizational goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships with key NYSTEC partners and clients in support of NYSTEC service delivery and community engagement goals.
  • Act as the primary liaison between NYSTEC and the Air Force Research Laboratory – Information Directorate (AFRL/RI), supporting both the CEO and the Leadership Team in those relationships.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate AFRL into current/future NYSTEC contract work and work with Business Development and Service Delivery to identify areas where AFRL can add value to new opportunities.
  • Move opportunities forward through prospecting, definition, proposal development/submission, and successful delivery as appropriate.
  • Oversee AFRL accounts to manage expectations and meet in person to provide project status reports and collect feedback.
  • Develop strong relationships with NYSTEC business partners in upstate NY.
  • Interact with current and prospective clients and partners (AFRL divisions and branches, Rome area contractors, local nonprofits, and local stakeholders) to ensure an understanding of NYSTEC service offerings and to develop new opportunities.
  • Seek new opportunities and partnerships for NYSTEC innovation across government, academia, and industry as appropriate.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the fields of technology-based economic development (TBED) and technology-to-market (T2M) for NYSTEC and our external partners and clients.
  • Based on plans and goals, make recommendations to NYSTEC Leadership for future NYSTEC innovation efforts in TBED, T2M, and other commercialization and technology transfer activities.
  • Perform financial, performance, and risk management for NYSTEC innovation efforts with accompanying programmatic goals, benchmarks, and key performance indicators (KPIs) within defined parameters.
  • Champion NYSTEC’s culture, values, and reputation in NYSTEC’s markets and with all staff, clients, and partners.
  • Work closely and in collaboration with Leadership, Service Delivery, and Internal Services staff to ensure alignment with and realization of NYSTEC’s goals.
  • Represent NYSTEC at select events, conferences, and other external meetings (NYS Forum, Rome Reps, AFRL Technology Days, etc.) as needed.
  • Serve on boards, councils, and other community entities as agreed to.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About You:

Required Qualifications

  • Possesses strong federal, state, and local government entity expertise. This includes experience with large government contracting requirements and the intersections with academia.
  • Brings a strong network of industry partner contacts.
  • Exhibits strong project management skills.
  • Presents a professional and business-like image to clients, visitors, and the public.
  • Possesses strong computer skills, including maintaining a client relationship management (CRM) system and experience using Microsoft applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel,
  • Outlook, Visio), as well as collaboration tools (Microsoft Teams, Webex, Zoom, SharePoint) or equivalent.
  • Has a strong understanding of business incubation, commercialization, and technology transfer landscapes.
  • Is knowledgeable in the services delivered by NYSTEC and attuned to trends and emerging technology developments.
  • Able to work under minimal supervision—with work reviewed—to ensure the achievement of strategic goals and objectives.
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrates strong interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Displays strong collaboration skills, promoting open and honest communication, mutual respect, and strong teamwork.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to manage projects efficiently and to meet specific—and perhaps short—deadlines.

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in a professional specialty, such as business administration, computer science, accounting, finance, facilities management, or human resource management, 10-plus years of relevant experience, including four years of management experience. An equivalent combination of advanced education, training, and experience will be considered.
