Radio Communications in Tunnels
Leveraging its knowledge of wireless communications technologies, NYSTEC designed a sophisticated solution to enable an urban transportation agency to obtain more reliable radio communications within a labyrinth of underground rail tunnels. NYSTEC was hired to analyze radio coverage and make recommendations to improve communications within a tunnel structure spanning more than two miles. The agency required a radio system with 95 percent area coverage and very high reliability. NYSTEC’s sophisticated solution incorporated complex distributed antenna systems, associated electronic control centers known as headends, and fiber optics. The resulting upgrades will greatly enhance the agency’s radio reliability, minimize interference, and provide a cost-effective solution.
