NYSTEC History
NYSTEC is a not-for-profit company founded by New York State in 1995, the same year Griffiss Air Force Base closed in Rome, NY. The timing was no coincidence. NYSTEC was formed to help leverage technologies and expertise at Rome Laboratory (now the Air Force Research Lab’s Information Directorate in Rome) to benefit businesses and government entities statewide in the wake of the base closing. NYSTEC’s Rome office is still located at the former base, now called the Griffiss Business and Technology Park.
Following many successful projects with New York State agencies, NYSTEC evolved into a trusted technology advisor to government agencies and private institutions. In 1995, NYSTEC began with three employees, and it now employs 50. Legislation enacted in 1996 still enables New York State and New York City agencies to contract with NYSTEC on a sole-source basis. In keeping with the state’s original plan for the company, NYSTEC became fully independent in 2001 when the state discontinued all supplementary funding to the company. Today all NYSTEC revenues are derived from client contracts. In the early 2000s, NYSTEC established offices in Albany and New York City in addition to Rome.
Today NYSTEC’s primary business is to assist governments and institutions with planning, procuring, and integrating new communications and computing systems and technologies. NYSTEC also provides engineering services for communications, networking, and information security. NYSTEC still taps Air Force technologies, expertise, and resources in Rome. In addition, the company provides specialized services to organizations outside New York State.
